The NAIST International Scholar Program provides basic financial support (referred to as "the NAIST International Scholarship") to privately financed international students with outstanding academic talent and ambition (international students who are not financed by the Japanese or a foreign government).

The NAIST International Scholar Program enables participants to focus on education and research in order to promote globalization of education and research at Nara Institute of Science and Technology (hereafter referred to as "NAIST").

Information on the scholarship

The Nara Institute of Science and Technology (NAIST) is a Japanese national university in Kansai Science City, which lies on the boundary of Nara, Osaka, and Kyoto. NAIST was founded in 1991 and consists of three graduate schools: information science, biological sciences, and materials science.

NAIST underwent an organizational restructuring in 2018 to allow it to continue study in these areas while also encouraging interdisciplinary research and education across conventional fields.

Criteria for Scholarships

This program is for privately funded foreign students who have passed the Screening of International Students by Special Recommendation and are planning to enroll in a PhD program at NAIST.

1. The President of NAIST determines the number of NAIST International Scholarship recipients each year based on the university's financial circumstances.
2. The NAIST International Scholarship is only valid for three years after you have enrolled in an NAIST doctorate program. During absences from school, however, no assistance will be offered.

The NAIST International Scholarship includes the following:

1. Overseas travel expenses from the recipient’s country to Japan
2. Employment as a research assistant
3. Enrollment fee
4. Tuition
5. Other support deemed necessary by the President of NAIST
